This week had such a good mix of my usual comfort spots and a little adventure.

I started back at Barker on Mass Street in Lawrence on Thursday — no surprise there, it’s basically our happy place. I ordered classic fried eggs (over medium), an oat milk classic cappuccino, and their perfectly chewy, tangy homemade sourdough. My sister went for their wildflower honey matcha latte (so floral and cozy) and the famous breakfast sandwich — sausage tucked into their homemade biscuit. Honestly, Barker just gets breakfast right. There’s something so grounding about starting the day there.

To end the week off, today, I got to tag along with my dad in KC for work, and it was such an amazing day. We stopped at Billie’s Grocery (in Gallhan Parkway area) — one of my favorite spots for both food and atmosphere. My dad and I decided to branch out with their charcoal latte (it had this unexpected orange-zesty note with almond milk — cool but definitely a one-time try for me). The vanilla cappuccino, though? Absolute heaven. Creamy, rich, and exactly what we needed.

For food, Billie’s nailed it with their famous chicken sandos + sweet potato fries. There is something about their menu that feels bright and nourishing, and don’t even get me started on their pastry + cupcake selection. Every time I walk by their display case, it takes all my willpower not to order one of everything, especially the chocolatey ones.

The best part, though, wasn’t just the food — it was the day with my dad. I love helping him out with his lunches, chatting with RNs and an MD, chatting about my future together, what has been going on in the world, and just being part of his world for a bit. Even though it isn’t my job, I adore pitching in, helping him feed people, and making little connections along the way. Here's to more weeks of coffee, conversation, and meals that feed more than just the stomach.

xoxo,
Lily
