If you’ve ever wanted to start writing letters but weren’t sure what to say, or if you already have a penpal and sometimes find yourself stuck on what to write next — I’ve got you. One of my favorite ways to keep the conversation going (and get to know each other better!) is with a simple Q&A.

You can answer a few questions in your letter, then ask your penpal to do the same in their reply. It makes writing feel less intimidating and more like a relaxed chat with a friend. Plus, you get to learn all kinds of little details that wouldn’t come up otherwise.

To make it easy, I’ve put together a big list of questions — grouped by topics like favorites, faith, everyday life, dreams, and fun stuff. You can use as many or as few as you want. You could even include a small list in each letter, kind of like a little letter-writing game.

Basics & Everyday Life
  • What’s your full name, and is there a story behind it?
  • Do you have any siblings or pets?
  • What does a typical day look like for you?
  • Are you more introverted, extroverted, or somewhere in between?
  • What do you love most about where you live?

Favorites (A Great Way to Share Your Personality!)
  • Favorite book or author?
  • Favorite comfort food or meal?
  • Favorite season and why?
  • Favorite Bible verse or passage?
  • Favorite time of day?

Mail & Creativity
  • How did you get into penpalling?
  • Do you decorate your letters or keep it simple?
  • What’s the most creative thing you’ve included in a letter?
  • Do you save the letters you receive?
  • Have you ever done a themed letter (like fall or floral)?

Cozy & Personal
  • What’s your morning routine like?
  • How do you relax after a busy day?
  • Do you journal? What do you usually write about?
  • What’s a small thing that always makes you happy?
  • What’s your idea of a perfect slow day?

Faith & Thoughts
  • How have you seen God’s sovereignty in your life recently?
  • Do you have a favorite chapter or verse?
  • What’s a doctrine or truth from Scripture that challenges or encourages you right now?
  • How do you pray? Aloud? In your journal? With others?
  • Who in your life has shaped your understanding of the gospel?

Dreams & Fun
  • If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
  • What’s one skill you wish you had?
  • What’s a small dream you have for the next year?
  • If you could open a tiny shop or café, what would it be like?
  • What’s your go-to comfort rewatch (movie/show)?

Bonus Ideas to Include in Your Letters:
  • Write a little “day in your life” snapshot.
  • List 5 things you’re thankful for this week.
  • Share a mini playlist of songs you love.
  • Describe your handwriting — do you like it? Hate it? Working on it?

Starting or keeping a pen pal relationship can feel intimidating, but Q&As like these make it so much easier and way more fun. If you want, you can pick just a couple of questions to answer in each letter — and ask your penpal to do the same, turning your letters into little windows into each other’s worlds.

If you try this out, I’d love to hear which questions you liked best or if you have your own favorites to add! Writing letters might be slow, but it’s one of the richest ways to connect with someone — and these questions help make sure there’s always something to say. Get to writing!

xoxo,
Lily
